I recently became of a company called Tandemkross that specializes in aftermarket parts for the Ruger 10/22, Ruger 22/45, Ruger Mark II Ruger Mark III and Keltec PMR Pistols. Tandemkross offers some pretty neat products. The first such product to catch my eye is the  Ruger 10/22 Mag Doubler. The Ruger 10/22 Magazine Doubler connects two 10 round magazines together at the base. It is the cleanest implementation of the concept I have seen to date. I recently purchased a KIDD INNOVATIVE DESIGN Bull Barrel from a close friend for an incredible price. He had purchased the KIDD INNOVATIVE DESIGN 10 22 Match Bull Barrel as an upgrade for his Ruger 10/22, but unfortunately, the barrel weight was more than his kids could handle. They struggled through one loaded magazine, and that was it. To my eyes, the KIDD INNOVATIVE DESIGN 10 22 Match Bull Barrel appears unused.

Acquiring this barrel causes another project to go unfinished while another comes to life. My friend’s point about barrel weight is valid, so I decided that addressing the weight might be an exciting project in itself. I have a few ideas, but I will not spill the beans at this time. You will have to keep checking back.

KIDD INNOVATIVE DESIGN 10 22 Match Bull Barrel Description:

We believe these are the finest barrels on the market, each one is hand lapped. Our stainless steel barrel is bored and rifled by Lothar Walther in Germany. Tony Kidd then performs all the final machining to make our match barrel a worthy KIDD product. A proprietary chamber reamer is used to ensure the cartridge and bullet feed smoothly while allowing the bullet to consistently engrave the rifling .020″.    Our barrels are chambered to accept .22 ammo (not long enough for stingers) and have a 1:16 twist.  The unique convex extractor slot eliminates extraction problems by ensuring the extractor is always in perfect alignment with the case rim. Why doesn’t everybody use this extractor slot? Because the tooling is very expensive and requires tolerances be held very close for proper machining. Each barrel receives an 11 degree crown and the double ring logo at the muzzle.  Our 20″ bull barrel weighs 3.5 lbs, 18″ weighs 3.3 lbs, and our 16.5″ weighs 3.1lbs.
 
We can offer such a great price on this barrel because we don’t sell to distributors, only retail and dealer pricing is offered, therefore we don’t have to increase our price to compensate for 3 tier pricing. There are cheaper barrels out there but as with all KIDD products, “you get what you pay for.” To avoid “barrel droop,” check your clamp to make sure you only have moderate tension on the screws. We tighten them to around 10 inch pounds which is just snug enough to keep the barrel from moving forward. No more than this, as even the slightest tension moves the barrel and receiver out of alignment.

Barrel installation: Depending on your receiver, if there is paint build up in the receiver where the barrel extension is inserted, be sure to scrape that out. If the barrel is tight, use an anti-seize compound to assist in installation. It is best if you can get the barrel started, then turn it over and tap the back of the receiver with a rubber mallet. Be sure to line the extractor slot up as you are installing the barrel. Your barrel is ready to shoot, just run two magazines through it before you really start looking at group size. Do this each time you change brands of ammunition as well. Keep the chamber clean, but don’t clean the bore too much you will decrease accuracy. Depending on the ammo, clean the bore around every 500 rounds.

This past Christmas, as a gift, I received a Tactical Solutions Vantage 10/22 Stock in Crimson Red. At the same time, a little unexpected and unplanned, I was pleasantly surprised by this beautiful and thoughtful gift. The timing was perfect. I had been in the process of gathering parts for another 10/22 project for this site, but I was not very far along in the process, and the new stock allowed me to fast-track another brand new project. You see, back in the fall, early September, if I recall correctly, I happened on to a website from a company called  Kidd Innovative Design. My initial impression of the website was that Kidd Innovative Design offered premium 10/22 parts that could be used to assemble possibly the finest 10/22’s. To say I was interested is an understatement. I then researched Kidd Innovative Design’s products on the various rimfire forums. By all reports, there were no finer 10/22 parts. That was all I needed. The bug was planted.

Fast forward to January, I decided to put off the other 10/22 project and order a KIDD Classic Receiver for examination purposes before taking the full plunge. Much to my surprise, the receiver arrived at my FFL in a few days. It was apparent that the KIDD Classic Receiver was beautifully machined and finished inside and out. A few days later, I ordered the remainder of the parts to complete the project. Three days later, USPS delivered a little box of joy. Kidd Innovative Design’s attention to detail is evident in their packaging and shipping. There is absolutely no risk of anything getting dinged or scuffed. Midway can learn a few things from these folks.

The trigger assembly, barrel, and bolt are machined and finished just as well as the Classic Receiver. Every surface and fit speaks of quality and precision, which I do not typically see on firearms other than 1911’a that cost thousands of dollars more. To say I was impressed is an understatement.

I spent about an hour that evening assembling the 10/22 rifle seen at the top of the page. Assembly was not as easy as assembling an AR15 but still pretty easy. Kidd Innovative Design includes all the hex key wrenches required except for the barrel v-block.

Note: Being manufactured to tight tolerances, special care needs to be taken when installing the barrel

I like to test customer service before I recommend anything, and I think it’s essential for folks to know upfront what to expect. Kidd Innovative Design’s customer service is every bit as good as its products. Each email was responded to very quickly with thorough and helpful information. Even an offer to install the barrel into the receiver for me if I had trouble. What more could I ask for from Kidd? Superior product with matching support. Kudos to Kidd Innovative Design.

Only one question remains. Do I go with a fluted barrel and a two-stage trigger for the next project?

Over the next few weeks, I will get a suppressor and optics mounted and if the weather co-operates some range time. I will throw together a dedicated page to this product in my typical part-by-part explanation with pictures.

High Tower Armory’s innovative HTA 90/22 stock is now shipping. The stock includes everything needed to make a standard Ruger 10/22 into a P90-ish bullpup and comes in three flavors; black, olive drab, and flat dark earth. The converted 10/22 has a working charging handle and safety in the same places as a real FN P90, but the translucent “magazine” up top is a fake, simply storing spare .22 rounds for looks. You’ll need to insert a regular magazine from underneath, where the actual P90 ejects its spent casings. The HTA 90/22 ejects its empties to the right using the standard 10/22 ejection port, which you can see peeking out from the side of the stock.

Some serious problem solving went into shoehorning the world’s most popular .22LR rifle into a carbon copy of the famous P90 shape without requiring any gunsmithing at all. The quality of the stock and its fittings is very high, unlike some bullpup conversions of the past. The kit comes with  a fake silencer/suppressor that mounts on the stock itself and will work with either the standard barrel or Ruger’s optional .920in heavy barrel with no modifications needed. High Tower Armory states that they have had 14 year old kids successfully follow the installation instructions (which is going to make me feel real smart if I get stuck somewhere!).

One word of warning; to meet the overall length requirement of 26 inches and keep the 10/22 a Title 1, non-NFA rifle, you need an 18 inch barrel. Factory Rugers come with an 18.5 inch barrel, but if you’ve cut yours down to 16 inches, the HTA kit is a ticket to SBR city. The black version costs $229.99, and the olive drab and flat dark earth variants run just ten bucks more than that. Of course, you have to provide your own Ruger 10/22 for the stock to fit on. If you love the look and feel of the FN P90 but don’t want to pay the high cost of 5.7×28 ammunition just to plink with, High Tower Armory has all three colors in stock right now.

After being utterly thrilled with how our first 10/22 project turned out, I decided it was time to start a new project that is 180 degrees different than our BENCHREST TACK DRIVER. This time around, I am targeting size, weight, and noise.

Presently, I’m considering a 10/22 based on action and receiver parts from the following companies.

Once I accumulate the hardware, I will update this post and layout a page similar to the previous 10/22 project. I will also monitor advertised weights versus the actual weights. Stay tuned.
